Scott Biggs
Mechanical Engineering Apprentice
Bio
Potential World Traveler and Home Owner. Mechanical Engineering Apprentice.
When other kids were running to grab the swings at recess time, Scott was racing to get the workbench that was provided at his primary school. There he would hammer, assemble, build and get his hands on whatever other things were available. Early on, Scott knew that he never wanted to get stuck behind a desk in a boring office job but that he wanted to do a job where he could use his practical and mechanical skills.
Pressing on through his high school years it was the subjects like maths, science, metal and woodwork that he enjoyed the most, did best in and that made the rest of his school time tolerable. English was painful for him!
Now Scott is finishing his Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship for Levett Engineering and he enjoys the variety in his work day. Doing up to 20 different tasks a day, he gets to work with great materials like aluminium, titanium, stainless steel and plastics. Plus he is trusted to work on expensive machinery doing turning, milling, fitting and above all CNC machining. An apprenticeship suits him perfectly because he gets skilled while he is learning and doesn’t have to sit in a classroom all day.
Scott likes seeing the immediate results of his work and is proud of what he has accomplished at the end of each day. It’s kind of exciting for him to know that some of the parts that he manufactures will end up on defence aircraft flying around the world and that he is a part of an important team.
Scott’s passion has led to workplace excellence which in turn has led to him winning the 2009 SA Apprentice of the Year. Scott’s career choice is a wise one considering he is using his natural gifts and talents. In addition he is working in a state-wide area of skills shortage. The job security prospects are excellent, meaning that Scott’s goals of buying a house and travelling overseas are realistic. In fact, he may be able to do this earlier rather than later!
