So when I was a kid, I was obsessed by trucks and cars. I was really into cardboard and making models and toys out of them and I was obsessed about - by structures and physical things. So I headed into university and I took on a mechanical engineering degree.

During the end of my school life, my parents had a messy divorce, which hurt me. I moved over to Melbourne chasing a girl. I took up some blacksmithing and I did some work with iron which was fantastic. After that, I decided it was really time I got back into the degree because there was so much potential there. So, I finished the engineering degree and came out and started working in the field of acoustics, noise and vibration.

I chose a job working with submarines and my role there is to silence them. So what do I do? I take a submarine and I have got a lot of noise sources, like pumps and motors, which I've got to make quiet. So what I will do is make a computer model of my submarine and I work out how much sound gets from the inside to the hull.  And the hull acts as a big loud speaker.  And then I go out with some measurement equipment, accelerometers and hammers, and then I'll understand how to arrange the metal and the rubber and where to put the pumps such that I don't make noise from my submarine and we're quiet.

So what I really like about my job is the fact that I have learned about the secrets of nature; so I understand that structures continuously wobble and vibrate with every sound, with every vibration that's around. So I really get to understand a lot more about how the world works in a very special area, and it's amazing where these sorts of studies can take you.
