Finding my way by radar

Anthony Gerbino

The travel bug hit and Anthony didn't ignore it - he found a way to travel and work with the RAAF.

Leaving school with the travel bug, Anthony knew uni was going to be tough. Still, looking back, he had a lot to be proud of. School wasn't exactly easy for Anthony. The son of proud parents from non-English speaking backgrounds, he'd found it difficult initially to get his head around verbs, nouns, and all those weird English grammar rules. He was confident with all the technical subjects though and loved messing around with new technology.

When he hit uni, he figured electronics would be his thing. He managed to make it through a couple of years before that pesky travel bug finally got him. Signing on with the RAAF as an Air Surveillance Operator, he travelled the country with money in his pocket.

Four years went by and things were great but Anthony knew if he really wanted to get ahead, he'd need to finish his degree. He shook the bug and knuckled down and got through.

Now he works for Raytheon Australia as an engineer on Electronic Warfare Systems for the new Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers for the Royal Australian Navy. Really high-tech stuff that provides the ships with early warning of and protection against incoming supersonic and subsonic missiles. Just like in the movies, everyone is constantly improving their weapon systems. Anthony gets to test and improve advanced sensors and weapons to defeat threats in a combat situation. He's always relied upon his own 'radar search' for opportunities and to figure out where he wants to go and now he's found the perfect job.
