Australian Aerospace

Posted by mickb

I have considered working in the defence force for a long time and at first wanted to be a soldier or at least try out the gap year program to see how I liked it. I later decided that it would be better for me to continue my academics and pursue a course at university. The course that I am interested in is Aerospace Engineering which has pointed me back towards the defence force in hopes that I may gain work there as an officer/engineer after university. I have applied to go to Adelaide University but I have also considered going to Duntroon and have seen a number of ADFA visits to my high school. This work visit with Australian Aerospace would really help me to see what my future could hold in the defence force as an aerospace engineer and help me to finalise my career path.

Hey mickb, while the Australian Aerospace prize has happened, you've still got 8 days to submit an entry for the final prize for 09: to win a day at ASC and discover what it takes to keep the Collins Class subs silent in the water. Head to our competition page for details.

It's great that you're keen on Aerospace Engineering - you should check out Lucas Martin's story on the 'They Did It' page as he studied Aerospace Engineering and now works for Australian Aerospace.

Speaking of, did you know that there are actually two sides to defence? The forces...army, navy, airforce...and the industry - the private companies which design, build and maintain all the systems and equipment which the forces use? Because they're private companies, you don't have to join the forces to work for them, and you still get to work with cutting edge technology, travel and get paid to do a rewarding job.

And as the defence industry is massive here in SA and growing by the year, there are going to be tonnes of career opportunties. Want to know more about the defence industry? Navigate your way to this page.... My Future - What's Out There - Industries - Defence Industry and let us know what you think.

Hi mickb, just giving you some further information already posted here by the team.

As they said, all the maintainance gets done by private companies, including ASC, BAE, Raytheon, etc...
All these companies hire many different fields from trades in production, drafting with auto CAD, engineering, design and logistics. There are many options out there in the private and public sector, you aren't limited to working in the forces.

As the team said, enter the prize to win a day at ASC with ben, you may see myself there too.
