My Learning Pathways

'Do I do an apprenticeship, a VET course or go to Uni? Do I just get a job? I'm confused.'

Whatever you decide you want to do in the future, often there are many different pathways you can take with your studies. Working out the most appropriate path for you means spending some time discovering the subjects you may need and what the most suitable courses are to set you on the right track.

Where should I study?
You can carry on your study in a number of ways, for example go to uni, undertake a Vocational Education Training (VET) program or take on an apprenticeship and learn on the job.

Studying at uni largely offers a good theoretical approach to subjects mixed with some practical application. Alternatively a VET program offers great theory and lots of hands on skills training while apprenticeships are often very much hands on.  So there's something for everyone!

You might be suited to one method of learning more than another so have a think about how the different approaches fit in with what you might have learnt about yourself.

If you've got an idea of what you want to do, a good starting place is with your career counsellor, Apprenticeship Broker or a teacher. They may be able to help you with some information about suitable apprenticeships or university or VET courses.

What should I study?
If you have an idea of what your dream job is, then you'll study subjects that support that. If you aren't sure yet, then it's important that you have a mix of subjects so that when you do make a decision, you've got everything you need.

There is no question that maths and science are important subjects to have as part of your foundation for the future. These are just some of the subjects you can apply maths and science to:

Geography Environment Physics Chemistry
Engineering Economics Computer Skills Communications
Electronics Geology Biology Design

This is not an exhaustive list and there are many other subjects but it's important to think about any study choices in relation to your ambitions because you never know when you'll need them!
