My future

'How do I make my life that interesting? I'm not even sure what I want to do yet?'

You've seen the videos, read the stories and discovered people who are living successful lives and working in fields that they love. So now you're asking...

What about me?

Careers used to be like ladders - people started at the bottom and worked their way up. Working lives and progression were pretty clearly mapped out with little flexibility. Stable, but kind of boring...

Today it's quite different. Career paths are much more varied and different paths can be the route into a great job and a bright future. So if there are lots of exciting possibilities for your life - many of which you won't even be aware of - what are you supposed to do?

I really have to think about a career now??

Sure, it may seem like years 'til you have to decide what to do with your life after school, but the stories will have shown you that planning your study and your future is vital if you want to have a wide range of options open to you, and enjoy what you do. In fact if you want to make the best choices for your life, you need to start thinking now.

I'm not even sure what I want to do. Can I keep my options open?

Definitely. In fact we recommend it! You shouldn't make important decisions that close big doors on you until you're really, really sure. Now you might have noticed that everyone in our stories made sure they studied maths and science. That's right. Some wanted to because they were good at those subjects, but some didn't want to because they really didn't like them - but what they did know is that maths and science help you have the widest range of options and can be your key to a satisfying future!

I want to get started!

No-one's expecting you to decide on a career today, but it's a good move to begin to think about it. You can start by getting to know yourself - it's the best way to build up an idea of the future you want to have. A good way to do this is to think about your interests, your skills, your values and where these things can take you

Then you can tie everything together in a way that's fun, not frustrating. Also, if you're in Year 10, you can bookmark useful info in this site that will contribute to your Personal Learning Plan. Good luck!
